At our TSC Watersports AGM held on 26th September 2020 our Commodore, Grant Ekermans spoke about the importance of aligning the Club with the various Watersports National Federations to further secure the Club’s position. The proposed changes to the Club Constitution were endorsed by those present.
The following watersports trophies were awarded to members for various contributions and performances through the 2019/2020 season:
Yachtsman of the Year – Grant Ekermans (1st or 2nd in all 3 Southern Charter Classics Mirror Class, 3rd in Mirror Nationals, competed in Laser Nationals)
Bayer Monsanto Trophy (Most determined performance) – Henri van Schaik (Jnr) – Perseverance in sailing regattas (3 Southern Charter Classics and Youth Nationals)
Beele Bowl (Family that has done the most for sailing) – Rust Family (Continued support of sailing as a family)
Brinks Spar Hobie 14 (Hopie 14 Best performance) – Klaas de Rooy (Perennial Winner of these trophies for competing as often as he can)
Brinks Spar Hobie 16 (Hobie 16 Best performance)- Klaas de Rooy
Commodores Cup (Discretionary dinghy / hobie long distance) – Gordon Nel & Sinta Ebersohn (only Hobie in the TSC 9 Hour Challenge and completing all 9 hours)
Dabchick Trophy – JD Venter (Purchased a Dabchick in the past season and sailed it competitively)
Double Decker (Discretionary Hobie 16) – Jonathan & Talita Olivier (Most active TSC Hobie sailors)
Gloria Machin Trophy (Keelboat Cruisers) – Steve & Shelley Scholl (mention must be made of Erik (Oulik), Dieter / Warner (Merlin), Wayne (Floki), Johan (Aqua Rouge))
Model Boat Trophy – David Booth (Most competitive Radio Sailor and bringing the sport back to our club)
Norton Trophy (Keelboat Long Distance) – Mary-Ann Sharwood (1st across the line in the TSC 9 Hour Challenge)
Saldanha Trophy (Discretionary keelboat or dinghy) – Wayne Philip (Dedication to sailing in the time he has spent on repairing his boat and the time on water, taking his granddaughter out, and causing most stress to safety by being out in bad weather)
Speed Print Trophy (Senior youth of the year) – Christo-Louis Rust (Improvement in sailing ability and especially in improving as a sailing instructor)
Spilhaus Youth Trophy (Most promising young sailor) – JD Venter
Spilly’s Tankard (Laser discretionary) – Dylan Long (best Laser sailor winning the Hermanus leg of the Southern Charter Classic)
Suzi-Q Trophy (Keelboat champion discretionary) – Nigel Smithie (Winner on redress of the TSC 9 Hour Challenge after assisting a fellow sailor in difficulty)
Topaz Champions – Nakita & Natasha van Eck (Best performances in a Topaz at the Southern Charter Classics)
Trying Trophy (Trying their best) – Lukas van Wyk
Bumper Trophy (Biggest “blotch” of the season) – Kuba Miszewski (For dropping Panawonda off her cradle onto the hard)
TSC Angling Trophy (Most improved angler) – Stephan de Lange
TSC Youth Angler Trophy – Ryan Chandler
At the AGM on Sunday, the annual Lynette Lake Memorial Trophy for service to our club was awarded jointly to Keith Lake and John Salfire who both recently retired from serving our club after 25 and 29 years respectively.
Commodore’s Medals were awarded to:
Franco Swanepoel – for contribution to watersports in the promotion of angling
Amy Wahl – for contribution to sailing as regatta secretary for Youth and Mirror Nationals
Neil Ashton – for contribution to sailing in organising the Southern Charter Classic regatta and through Theewater Sailing Academy
Di Hutton-Squire – for contribution to sailing as a bridge officer at various regattas
Mary-Ann Sharwood – for contribution to sailing as a bridge officer at various regattas
Shane Wiscombe – for continued service to the NSRI
A special mention was made of Franco Swanepoel and his fishing group of himself, Shaun Waller, Riaan Oosthuizen, Paul Plumstead and Jacques Terblanche who were awarded the Social Sports Group of the Year Award at the Overberg District Sports Awards dinner. A special privilege was the awarding of SAMSA skippers certificates to two of our staff, Emil Lewis and Eswil (China) Sauls who are now training to assist Errol with safety on the dam.
