TSC Winter Series Regatta 2026

Excellent Racing, New Faces and a Grand Finale Still to Come

The 2026 TSC Winter Series is now two-thirds complete, and what a series it has been. Despite the challenges that winter sailing can bring, competitors have enjoyed a wide variety of conditions, close racing, and some outstanding individual performances. Most encouraging of all has been the number of sailors who have chosen to join the racing fleet, including several competing in a regatta for the very first time.

With two weekends completed and the third and final weekend still to come, there is everything to play for as the series heads towards an exciting conclusion.

Weekend One: A Test Across the Full Range of Conditions

The opening weekend attracted a strong turnout, setting a positive tone for the series. It was particularly pleasing to welcome a number of sailors who were experiencing competitive racing for the first time. The growing fleet demonstrated exactly what the Winter Series is intended to achieve: providing enjoyable, accessible racing for sailors of all experience levels.

Two races were completed on Saturday in conditions that steadily built throughout the afternoon. By the finish of the second race a strong, consistent breeze had established itself across the dam, providing exciting sailing and a demanding challenge for the newcomers.

Sunday could not have been more different. The first two races were sailed in exceptionally light and often frustrating conditions, where reading the wind shifts and finding pressure on the course became the deciding factor. No-one did this better than Grant Eckermans, who showed that experience remains invaluable. Grant consistently found a way forward when others appeared to be standing still, opening impressive leads in conditions where gains seemed impossible.

By midday the breeze finally filled in, transforming the final race into a classic winter sailing day. As the wind strengthened, Sean van Aswegen demonstrated why he is the sailor to beat in the series, producing a dominant performance in the stronger conditions aboard his ILCA 4.

After five races across the weekend, Sean van Aswegen emerged as the winner of the Open Class, while Jem Smuts secured first place in the Optimist fleet.

Weekend Two: Those Who Stayed Away Missed Out

The second weekend provided a different challenge. A clash with several other events, combined with a gloomy weather forecast and typical Cape Town winter conditions, resulted in a smaller fleet than the turnout seen during the opening weekend.

Those who chose to stay home missed the great winter sailing conditions on offer.

Saturday delivered superb racing conditions. A demanding course tested sailors’ boat handling, tactical awareness and endurance across three races. Sean van Aswegen once again led from the front, continuing his impressive series form. Behind him, there were encouraging signs of progress from the Dart sailed by Leon and Erik, whose performance improved noticeably throughout the day.

Sunday’s racing initially appeared under threat as rain clouds and squalls moved across the area. A sensible delay by the race officer allowed the worst weather to pass before racing started. Anticipating further bad weather later in the day, the race officer cleverly set a shorter course that enabled competitors to complete three quick races before more rain squalls arrived.

The result was some of the closest and most exciting racing of the series so far. With a short start line and compact course, sailors fought hard for clear starts, and the fleet remained tightly packed throughout the races. Margins at the finish were small, rewarding concentration and consistency from start to finish.

The weekend provided a timely reminder that one of the best places to spend a Cape winter day is on the water rather than watching the weather forecast from home.

While Sean van Aswegen secured overall victory for the second weekend, the competition was close. This time he claimed top honours by just a single point.

One Weekend Remains

With two successful weekends completed, the stage is now set for the final round of the 2026 TSC Winter Series.

The opening events have delivered everything from drifting light airs to challenging breezes, from first-time racers discovering the excitement of competition to experienced sailors demonstrating their skill. Just as importantly, the series has shown that winter sailing at Theewaters Sports Club can provide some of the finest racing conditions of the year.

Whether you are currently competing in the series, have been following the results from shore, or have never raced at TSC before, the final weekend offers a perfect opportunity to get involved. With improving competition, close racing and championship positions still to be decided, there is all to play for as the Winter Series reaches its conclusion.
